We are in a unique moment to influence the course of world history together and the time is now.  During the 50th anniversary of the historic Cuban Revolution, the governments of both nations are changing. Cuba’s leader of the half century revolution has finally stepped down from power.  President Obama has expressed plans to normalize our relationship with Cuba. The coming years will be full of risks, losses, triumphs, and misunderstandings. There exists a fragile possibility to form a new relationship where for the first time in all of history, Cuba and the US could have a healthy relationship of economic, social, cultural, and political partnership.

Project Por Amor is an example of positive globalization.  Due to developments in technology, it is now possible for Americans and Cubans to collaborate again.  Email, the internet, video projection, and digital home recording are empowering us to build alliances and create “telecollaborations” together. The Closest Farthest Away is a model of collaborating with other countries around the world. It allows us to see, experience, and build friendship with people that have been forbidden to us.

This performance is being built in the context of extreme opposing political ideologies rooted in the Cold War and Third World imperialism. Project Por Amor is an opportunity to transcend this paradigm into a conversation of what’s possible. We are not interested in either country’s political position and hold none of our own, other than the stand we are taking for international friendship.

We realize that we have taken on one of the world’s greatest challenges: organizing a collaboration between two political adversaries. Hopefully more people will be able to walk this road after us.  We live in a globalized era when international communication is part of our daily lives. Meanwhile, current international affairs have become more and more unstable. The Closest Farthest Away is utilizing improvements in technology to create improvements in international relationships.
