Project Por Amor unites Cubans and Americans through artistic collaboration. It was founded in 2005 by Peter Jensen, Sage Lewis, Aleigh Lewis, and Daisy Díaz. Various new works are being created and organized by emerging artists in both countries who are exploring creative ways of transcending political barriers imposed between blockaded nations. Our goal is to connect to a neighboring culture who has become lost from our community using art as a way of building friendship with our "enemies."
The Closest Farthest Away, a hybrid of theater and cinema is the first work produced by Project Por Amor. This international interdisciplinary performance was created by contemporary artists from the US and Cuba between the ages of 25 and 35. New media can break barriers and express through hyper-realism the absurd relationship between our present cultures. Cuban and American characters defy space and distance to resolve their struggles of immigration, love, patriotism, and freedom.
This coming winter, two of the world's most gifted children's choirs The National Children's Chorus (LA & NYC) and Coro Diminuto (Havana) will sing a song together, each from their own coast, using audio and video projection to bring each other together in song from "far away." Performances will take place at UNICEF's annual celebration of International Children's Rights concert in Havana on November 20 and then in Los Angeles at the National Children's Chorus' Fall concert entitled "Nuestra Musica" at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica on December 18.
Another play titled Por Amor, enters a present-day Havana neighborhood called Cayo Hueso to witness an Afro-Cuban miracle performed in an obscure and ancient practice of "espiritismo." This play has been written by Peter Jensen and will eventually be produced as a feature-length movie to be filmed in Havana.
